Comparing solar panels starts with understanding what the specifications describe—and what they cannot tell you about a complete installation. A panel’s rated output is measured under defined conditions, so it is useful for comparing specifications but is not a promise of the energy a system will produce on a particular roof.
Efficiency describes how much of the sunlight reaching a panel is converted into electricity under specified test conditions. It can help when roof space is limited, but it should be considered alongside rated output, panel dimensions, and the needs of the overall system. A temperature coefficient indicates how a panel’s output changes as its temperature rises; compare values using the same units and test basis.
Roof suitability depends on more than panel specifications. Available area, roof condition and orientation, obstructions, and shading at different times of day can all matter. Ask how the proposed layout accounts for shaded areas and whether the selected equipment is appropriate for the roof and the rest of the system.
Review the product warranty separately from any performance warranty. Product coverage concerns defects or failures subject to its stated terms; performance coverage concerns output over time under the manufacturer’s conditions. Check the duration, exclusions, claim process, and what documentation may be needed rather than relying on the warranty headline alone.
A panel is one part of a system. Inverter selection, wiring, layout, installation quality, and site conditions affect how the system performs as a whole. Manufacturer specifications are not the same as independently verified results, and comparing panels alone cannot establish the outcome of a specific installation.
Before deciding, compare the specifications and warranty documents on a consistent basis, then ask how the proposed system design addresses your roof and energy needs. A clear comparison separates published product information from estimates about a complete system and avoids treating either as a guaranteed result.
